Close Combat and Special Items

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Due to the alrming number of items held during combat. A main weapon that can be a two handed Greatsword, A shield, a bow and a staff, there is now a penalty for combat with a Weapon and Special (staff or wand) equipped. You only do 75% damage. It might still be better to have the two equipped depending on your build. If you have a good staff and not such a good weapon, don’t bother euipping the weapon.

This does not effect bows or armour.

Mini Bosses

Monday, April 28th, 2008

I have added two new mini bosses to the dungeons. They spawn very often.

They are a couple of old and very grumpy Cave Trolls who do not take kindly to visitors.

PvP Strike Shoot

Monday, April 28th, 2008

There are two PvP single attacks now. Strike and Shoot. One is close combat, and the other is ranged.

You can Strike or Shoot a player once every 10 seconds. I wanted to try this out for two reasons.

1. It might add to possible Clan attacks on other players/clans. Making such battles more interesting.

2. This is part or the drive to introduce spells in an odd way. I want some spells that can be used for single attacks without going for an allout attack.

Note that you can not “Attack” a player for a long time after a Strike or a Shoot so you need to think it through if say for example two clans decide to attack one anothe in some location. It might be better to use a lot of Strikes and Shots rather than attacks.

Also, you can no longer attack players half your level or less. I am not sure is this will stay or not.

Web Based RPG

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

DicingDangers is an online browser based multiplayer role-playing game. You play the part of a fantasy character in a world of monsters and magic.

Characters & Traits

When your character is created, click on your name for detailed character information. You will notice that you have Trait Development Points (TDP) to spend. Spend them on either Strength, Dexterity or constitution. To start with focus on Strength. On each level you will get 2 more TDPs.

Now have a look at your equipment and your inventory. You will notice that you have some gold. Spend this gold on improving your armour or weapon. Each item has a stat [0,0]; the first number is the armour/protection the item affords, the second is the damage/attack. As time goes by you want to accumulate items that improve both your armour and damage.

Buy what ever items you can afford and then equip them. Note that you must have a high enough level to equip certain items. Armour is generally based on your overall level whereas weapons are based on your combat level (see your character).

Exploring, Fishing & Combat

Now try exploring. You will find random things as well as come up against monsters and criminals. If you want a more peaceful life, buy a fishing rod and go to the Port of Nerlan. Equip the rod, and try some fishing. Monsters drop gold and sometimes items.

Gather gold and buy better equipment. You will also gain experience or xp from doing these actions. When you get enough xp you will go up a level. Remember to increase your traits when this happens.

PvP

Player versus Player combat is done by selecting Others here. Fins a target of the same rank as you and attack them. If you win, the target might drop items in his/her inventory. If you are slain, you might drop items. You can attack other ranks but lower ranks do not drop items. You must wait a while before you can attack the same player twice in a row.

Locations

As you go up in level, seek out new locations to find tougher beasts to battle.

Race Wars

If you look at the stats page you will see how many players you have slain and of what race. Try to avoid attacking your own race.

Free Browser Game

An introduction to DicingDangers

As the creator of this game I am unable to give you an unbiased view of the game and so I will instead introduce you to it.

DicingDangers is a new browser based MMORPG. It is a high fantasy graphical/text based realm where you take on the role of one or two characters. The tone is light and fun yet an attempt is made to give it a certain depth.

The background and reason for the game is that I, the developer wanted to combine my love of fantasy, illustrating, role playing and story telling with my web design skills, and found this the perfect way to combine them all. This game has been in development for many months, but the roots go back quite a few years.

As a characters you start in the City of Nerlan where you are asked to go on a simple introductory quest. This quest involves fishing and rat catching. It gets you right into the key areas of the game; resource collection, exploration and combat.

The game is level based, so your character gains levels as he improves. There are many areas to explore and each area is designed for certain levels. Levels are gained by earning experience points when exploring, fishing, making potions etc.

Item collection is proving a popular pastime for current players. There are hundreds of items in game, and players enjoy showing off their latest finds. Encounters sometimes drop special items and these can then be seen by other players.

A recent introduction to the game is potion making. There is a small quest that leads to the ability to produce healing potions.

Combat is obviously a large part of the game. This is split into two varieties. Player versus Player and Player versus Monster.

They both work the same and the result is calculated immediately by the game engine. The player however is given tactical options with the ability to set rules for combat. These rules are when to flee, when to use a potion etc and can be based of the amount of life the character has left, or the battle round or even how much gold the character is carrying.

Both close combat weapons and ranged weapons are used. Ranged weapons are used for the first 3 rounds of combat. If the enemy does not have a ranged weapon then the attacker gets 3 free attacks.

The game is played using action points (ap) to perform key actions. You are given a generous amount, but the idea is to limit game play to a couple of hours twice a day. The reason for this is partly ethical but mostly in order to give those who can only spend a couple of hours a day the chance to keep up with others. This may appeal to older players who have less time to spend gaming.

At present there are a few skills such as close combat, ranged combat, alchemy, exploring and fishing. More are on the way, and an important note is that the game is live and thriving, but still in beta mode and being updated daily. For example new lands are opening up all the time. Alchemy is but a precursor to a full magic system. Guilds are to come. There is a lot to do already and hundreds are doing right now, but there is so much to come.
